The ‘Jamal Edwards effect’: the ability to harness tenacious self-made success in the digital era (as coined by one marketing agency). When 15-year-old Jamal Edwards started filming his friends rapping and singing with a £20 camera phone, there was no way of knowing he would today become a multimillionaire entrepreneur with an MBE to his name. His creation, SBTV, would come to be a groundbreaking platform for grime artists when he was still just a teenager. Read more in the bio🔗

AFROFUTURISM DISCUSSION PANEL
@solentuniversity
Solent Showcase Gallery
THURSDAY 25th OCTOBER 2018
6:30pm - 9pm

With a panel discussion chaired by Don John, come hear and discuss what Afrofuturism might mean to us in Southampton, and how you could shape a larger Afrofuturist project in our city in 2020/21.

On the panel is Naomi Miller (vocalist and back-up singer with Paloma Faith), @leylareynolds (art director @galdemzine), Junior Jones (producer and dance specialist) @salresco (Youth & Community Worker), Sharon Lloyd (@faceculturalist) (Solent School of Art, Design and Fashion). There will also be music provided by Jonathan Fashole-Luke and a chance to hang out.
We would love to see you there.
Please sign up for a free space on eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/afrofuturism-discussion-panel-tickets-51068696847 or email us on showcase@solent.ac.uk. You don't have to have an eventbrite ticket to attend, it just helpfully gives us an idea of numbers.
This event is part of the current exhibition: BLACK TO THE FUTURE: An Exploration of the Arts Through a Black Cultural Lens

As part of Black History Month, Southampton Race & Diversity consultant Don John and Solent Showcase Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of exciting UK artists.

From Badu to Barack Obama, through to Beyonce and Black Panther, Afrofuturism is making gains into the American mainstream and further afield. How do we connect with this movement? How do these representations speak to us in Southampton?

The show invites you to imagine how black individuals and communities can defy the norms of documented black histories by using creativity to spur social change.
The title, Black To The Future, comes from an influential essay by US author Mark Dery..

HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH!👊🏾✊🏾👍🏾👋🏾💪🏾 ✍🏾 My ‘QUESTION ME’ spoken word piece was written in response to WEIRD and wonderful questions about my BLACK (African-Caribbean) IDENTITY. 👸🏾 Some people would ask certain questions MOCKINGLY 😓. The answers in this poem not only show that we don’t have anything to be ASHAMED of, but moreover we have things to be EXCEPTIONALLY PROUD OF! 🙅🏾‍♀️ #SelfLoveOverSelfHate

Every day for Black History Month, we'll be sharing a piece of art by a black artist throughout history, including the modern day, and from around the world. Day 22: Objects of Beauty, Joy Gregory, 1992-5. Words from the artist: Who can deny the power of a pair of hairdresser’s scissors, or the bewitching effect of a set of dark false eyelashes? These images raise questions about women’s pursuit of changing ideals of beauty and the meanings we attach to the objects themselves. Some appear alongside tape measures, suggesting questions about ideal proportions. Others are chosen for the way they can change a body-shape, or even the way a woman walks. The apparent simplicity of the work belies its complex message.

This is the story of Ignatius Sancho. The first known Black British man to vote in an election. His letters regarding the Slave Trade helped to expose its atrocities and aided in humanising the perception of Africans to the wider British public in the 18th century. -- This Black History Month, we're releasing daily videos featuring the stories of forgotten individuals who have been systematically erased from history. Their contributions to society were ground breaking at the time and remain so today.

As part of Radiate BHM Festival, we were invited to have a storytelling event for 4 days in Sutton Central Library. Today was our first day and everyone was so excited to listen to one of our books entitled Milk&Cow. See you again tomorrow, this time we will have Murray the milkman himself to read you his stories.

#VoteStacyabrams #StacyAbrams #staceyabramsforgovernor IF OUR VOICE DIDNT MATTER THEY WOULDN'T WORK SO HARD SUPPRESSING IT. THINK PEOPLE Black People until we #ChangeTheNarrative about voting nothing will change. Many people say voting doesn’t matter but it seems to be working for the people who play chess not checkers. We vote once and give up. We vote and then we don’t keep on the person who we voted for. We must make sure they are doing their jobs. We have power but we have never really used it. If you think Voting doesn’t matter, ok well tell me what it hurts to try???? If you can tell me how voting hurts our people. I’m going to need you to shut up and let's try something instead of telling people to do nothing and just complaining. Full video in my #IGTV please watch and learn why this woman is amazing --------------------------------------------------#therealremyredd #Blackmedia #BotherVex #blackinamerica #BlackLivesMatter #blackhistoryiseveryday #BlackHistory #blackhistorymonth #StephCurry #Lebron #Nas #NFL #policebrutality #patriots #mondaynightfootball #getthestrap #ThisisAmerica #colinkaepernick #nike #boycottnfl #football #sundayfootball #mondaynightfootball #kanyewest #getthestrap #footballseason #BothamShemJean
